# sleuth\_intro

install sleuthkit, use mmls command to know where the partitions start,

Based on the output from your `mmls` command, the answer the CTF is looking for is right there in the table.

#### The Answer

The size of the Linux partition is **202,752** sectors.

#### What it is and why

Imagine a physical hard drive is like a **large warehouse**.

1. **Sectors (The Bricks):** A hard drive doesn't store data in one giant pile. It breaks the space down into tiny, equal-sized "bricks" called **Sectors**. On most systems (like yours), one sector is **512 bytes**.
2. **Partitions (The Rooms):** You don't usually use the whole warehouse as one room. You build walls to create sections. In your output, the "Linux" line is one of those rooms.
3. **The "Length" Column:** This tells you exactly how many "bricks" (sectors) were used to build that specific room.

#### Breaking down your `mmls` output:

* **Start (2048):** This is where the room begins. The first 2047 sectors are left empty (Unallocated) to leave space for the "doorway" (the Bootloader/Partition Table).
* **End (204799):** This is the address of the very last brick in that room.
* **Length (202752):** This is the **total count** of sectors inside that room.

**Calculation check:** If you subtract the Start from the End and add 1 (to include the starting sector itself), you get the length: $$204799 - 2048 + 1 = 202752$$

#### How big is that in "Human" numbers?

Since each sector is 512 bytes: $$202752 \times 512 = 103,809,024 \text{ bytes}$$ That is approximately **103.8 MB**.
